## In short

Two facing pages of a history textbook made as one: a coloured band crosses the middle of the book, and six picture cards under it share their width so the longest story gets the widest card.

## What you'll build

Pages 48 and 49 of a lower-secondary history book: *The paper road*, a thousand years of papermaking from Cai Lun's workshop to Keller's grindstone. The left page opens with the title and two paragraphs, the right page with a box on how a sheet was made by hand. Across the middle runs the timeline: an indigo band for Asia, a terracotta band for Europe that starts on the left page and crosses the spine. Under it, six cards with a picture each, hung from the band by a dot and a tick. The cards share their width: the 1844 card, with the longest story, takes width from its two neighbours (1 mm in Spanish, 7 mm in Japanese), and its dot moves with it. Every word is in the Markdown, in Spanish, English and Japanese.

**This recipe answers:**

- How do I lay out a timeline across a double page, with cards on both pages?
- How do I let a row of boxes share its width, so the one with the longest text gets wider?

## The short answer

One sheet for two pages, a band across the spine, two rows of cards.

```js
// script.js, lines 57–85
const pageTemplates = [{
  id: 'timeline',
  spread: true, // two facing pages laid as one sheet; it opens on a verso
  gutter: mm(10), // the band round the spine that frames keep off
  grid: { columns: 2, rows: ROWS, columnGap: mm(2 * PAGE.inner), rowGap: mm(ROW_GAP) },
  frames: [
    { name: 'title', takes: 'h1' },
    { name: 'lead', flow: true, fit: { minScale: 0.8 } },
    { name: 'box', style: 'box', grid: { col: 2, row: 1, rows: 4 }, height: 'fill',
      padding: { right: mm(66) }, fit: { minScale: 0.85 } },
    { name: 'box-picture', layer: 2, width: mm(56), placement: at('#box', 'top-right', -5, 10) },
    { name: 'band-1', style: 'band-asia', grid: { col: 1, row: 5 }, height: mm(BAND) },
    { name: 'band-2', style: 'band-europe', crossGutter: true, width: 'fill', height: mm(BAND),
      padding: { left: mm(2 * PAGE.inner + 4) }, // the colour crosses the fold, the words do not
      placement: at('#band-1', 'right-of') },
    ...cards.map(card),
    { name: 'colophon', style: 'colophon', optional: true, width: mm(170),
      placement: at('page', 'bottom-right', -PAGE.outer, -7) },
  ],
## Ingredients
**Teaches**
- [Spread templates](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#spreads): A template with spread: true lays two facing pages as one sheet from a verso; a frame with crossGutter runs across the spine, and the others keep off the gutter band.
- [Frames that grow in a group](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#when-the-text-grows): A stack or row of frames on a composed page: a frame as tall as its text, never below its minHeight, pushes the frames after it and what is anchored to them.
- [Decoration anchored to frames](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#decoration-running-heads-and-layers): The rules, boxes, pictures and short texts of a template’s decoration are laid after its frames, so an element anchored to "#frame" follows that frame wherever its group moves or widens it.
## Method
### 1 · One sheet for two pages
```js
// script.js, lines 57–85
const pageTemplates = [{
  id: 'timeline',
  spread: true, // two facing pages laid as one sheet; it opens on a verso
  gutter: mm(10), // the band round the spine that frames keep off
  grid: { columns: 2, rows: ROWS, columnGap: mm(2 * PAGE.inner), rowGap: mm(ROW_GAP) },
  frames: [
    { name: 'title', takes: 'h1' },
    { name: 'lead', flow: true, fit: { minScale: 0.8 } },
    { name: 'box', style: 'box', grid: { col: 2, row: 1, rows: 4 }, height: 'fill',
      padding: { right: mm(66) }, fit: { minScale: 0.85 } },
    { name: 'box-picture', layer: 2, width: mm(56), placement: at('#box', 'top-right', -5, 10) },
    { name: 'band-1', style: 'band-asia', grid: { col: 1, row: 5 }, height: mm(BAND) },
    { name: 'band-2', style: 'band-europe', crossGutter: true, width: 'fill', height: mm(BAND),
      padding: { left: mm(2 * PAGE.inner + 4) }, // the colour crosses the fold, the words do not
      placement: at('#band-1', 'right-of') },
    ...cards.map(card),
    { name: 'colophon', style: 'colophon', optional: true, width: mm(170),
      placement: at('page', 'bottom-right', -PAGE.outer, -7) },
  ],
  groups: [
    { name: 'opening', kind: 'stack', grid: { col: 1, row: 1, rows: 4 }, gap: mm(4),
      frames: ['title', 'lead'] },
    // A card whose text runs past its drawn height takes width from its neighbours first;
    // only when they have none to give does the row grow taller.
    { name: 'asia', kind: 'row', gap: mm(5), frames: ['c1', 'c2', 'c3'] },
    { name: 'europe', kind: 'row', gap: mm(5), frames: ['c4', 'c5', 'c6'] },
  ],
  decoration: { elements: [ground(), ...cards.flatMap(marks)] },
}];
```
`spread: true` makes the template one sheet as wide as both pages, and the page fence says the same with `spread`. A spread opens on a verso, so the build passes `continuation: { pageIndexOffset: 1, pageNumbering: { startAt: 48 } }`: page 1 of this excerpt is the book's page 48, a left page, and no blank page comes first. The grid has one column per page, with a gap of twice the inner margin, so nothing but the band comes near the fold. The second band sets `crossGutter` and a left padding of 36 mm: its colour runs from the end of the first band across the spine, and its words start on the right page, where the layout reads them.
### 2 · Cards that trade width
```js
// script.js, lines 48–53
const cards = ['c1', 'c2', 'c3', 'c4', 'c5', 'c6'];
const card = (name, i) => ({ name, style: i < 3 ? 'card-asia' : 'card-europe',
  width: mm((HALF - 10) / 3), minWidth: mm(40), minHeight: mm(CARD),
  shrink: 1, // a card gives width to a neighbour whose text runs past the row
  ...(i % 3 === 0 && { placement: at('container', 'top-left', i ? HALF + 2 * PAGE.inner : 0,
    CARD_TOP) }) }); // where each row starts
```
Each row of three cards is a `row` group, and each card has a `minHeight`, the height it is drawn at, and an `auto` height above that. When a card's text runs past the row's height, it takes the fewest whole millimetres it needs from the neighbours with `shrink`, each of which keeps the width its own text still fits in. Only when they have nothing more to give does the row grow taller. In the Spanish edition the 1844 card takes 1 mm from 1282; in Japanese it takes 7 mm, 3 from 1150 and 4 from 1282; with every text 30 % longer, the bench test, the Spanish card takes 15 mm and the box and the lead set their text at 92.5 % and 85 %.
### 3 · Dots that follow the cards
```js
// script.js, lines 89–100
function marks(name, i) {
  const ink = col(i < 3 ? 'asia' : 'europe');
  return [
    { kind: 'rule', id: `${name}-tick`, direction: 'vertical', thickness: pt(1), color: ink,
      placement: { ...at(`#${name}`, 'top', 0, -DROP), size: { height: mm(DROP) } } },
    { kind: 'box', id: `${name}-dot`,
      placement: { ...at(`#${name}`, 'top', 0, -DROP + 0.6), size: { width: mm(4.4),
        height: mm(4.4) } },
      style: { backgroundColor: col('paper'), borderColor: ink, borderWidth: pt(1.6),
        borderRadius: mm(2.2) } },
  ];
}
```
The dots and ticks are the template's `decoration`, anchored to `#c1` … `#c6` at their `top` and raised by the distance to the band. Decoration is laid after the frames, so when a card moves or widens, its dot stays over its centre. The cream ground is decoration too, a box anchored to the bleed's foot whose height runs up to the foot of `#band-1` (`size: { height: { to: '#band-1', edge: 'bottom' } }`), so it follows the band.
    en: 'Two hands lift the mould from the vat with a thin layer of fibres on it.',
    ja: '両手ですき枠を引き上げる。網の上に繊維の薄い層ができている。' }),
};
const SIZE = { forma: [800, 800, 363] }; // pixels and ppi: 56 mm wide; the cards' are 46 mm
const resources = await Promise.all(Object.entries(ART).map(async ([id, altText]) => {
  const px = SIZE[id] ?? [1000, 667, 550];
  const fileId = `${id}-${px[0]}.jpg`;
  await loadImage(fileId, asset(fileId));
  return { id, typeId: 'picture', kind: 'bitmap', caption: '', altText, createdAt: 0,
    updatedAt: 0,
    bitmap: { fileId, format: 'jpeg', width: px[0], height: px[1], resolution: px[2] } };
}));
```

The vignettes are 1,000 px wide at 550 ppi, 46 mm on the page, and a picture is never enlarged: a card that widens keeps its picture and gives the room to its text. A card narrower than 53 mm (the picture plus 3.5 mm of padding on each side) sets its picture smaller, which the stress test shows in the Japanese edition: the 1150 and 1282 pictures at 85 %.

## The whole recipe

One file, composed from the recipe's folder with the sample text and the Cookbook's shared kit inlined; it builds its own page. To run it, put it in a `<script type="module">` on an empty page, or paste it into the JS panel of a new CodePen (as a module). It imports postext from esm.sh, so there is nothing to install or build.

# The paper road

For centuries, making paper was a craft kept in Chinese workshops. It took more than a thousand years to travel from there to the mills of Europe.

Every people who learnt it changed the recipe to suit what they had to hand: mulberry bark in China, kozo in Japan, flax and rags in Samarkand and al-Andalus, and wood in the nineteenth century.

:::frame{slot="box" label="How a sheet was made"}
1. The fibres are chopped and left to soak until they break down into a pulp.
2. The mould, a fine screen on a wooden frame, is dipped into the vat and lifted out full of pulp.
3. The mould is shaken: the water drains away and the fibres lock together in an even layer.
4. The sheet is pressed between felts and hung up to dry.

The wires of the mould leave their print in the sheet: they are the fine lines you see when you hold paper up to the light.

**China.** Cai Lun, an official at the Han court, presents the emperor with paper made from mulberry bark, scraps of hemp, rags and old fishing nets. It costs less than silk and weighs far less than strips of bamboo. Archaeologists have found Chinese paper two centuries older, but Cai Lun's is the one copied across the empire.
:::

:::frame{slot="c2" label="610"}
::resource{id="v610"}

**Japan.** According to the chronicle *Nihon shoki*, the monk Damjing, from the Korean kingdom of Goguryeo, teaches the court how to make paper and ink. Japanese papermakers turn the bark of the kozo shrub into *washi*, thin and very strong. The Shōsōin in Nara still keeps household registers written on paper in 702.
:::

:::frame{slot="c3" label="751"}
::resource{id="v751"}

**Samarkand.** A tradition says that after the Battle of Talas, Chinese prisoners taught the craft in this Silk Road city. Samarkand's papermakers use flax and cotton rags. By about 800, Baghdad has workshops of its own, and paper replaces parchment in the caliph's archives.
:::

:::frame{slot="c4" label="1150"}
::resource{id="v1150"}

**Xàtiva.** The geographer al-Idrisi writes that this town of al-Andalus makes a paper with no equal anywhere in the world, sold to East and West. When James I takes the town in 1244, the workshops carry on.
:::

:::frame{slot="c5" label="1282"}
::resource{id="v1282"}

**Fabriano.** The mills of this Italian town use the river to drive hammers that beat rags to pulp. They size their sheets with gelatine, which stops the ink from spreading, and mark them with a watermark, a design that only shows against the light. By the 14th century, Italian paper is sold across half of Europe.
:::

:::frame{slot="c6" label="1844"}
::resource{id="v1844"}

**Saxony.** After printing come the newspapers, and there are no longer rags enough for so much paper. In 1798, Louis-Nicolas Robert had built a machine in France that made one continuous sheet, with no mould. In 1844 the weaver Friedrich Gottlob Keller presses spruce logs against a grindstone and gets wood pulp. From then on paper is cheap and plentiful, and a daily paper costs no more than a loaf of bread.

## Variations

### Keep the cards the same width

With `shrink: 0` no card gives width: the row grows taller instead, all three cards together, and its foot moves down the page.

```diff
-  shrink: 1, // a card gives width to a neighbour whose text runs past the row
+  shrink: 0,
```

## Pitfalls

- A card with a fixed `height` takes no part in the width trade, since it never runs past the row: give the cards a `minHeight`, as here, and leave the height `auto`.
- A size that runs to an edge of another box counts from the element's own anchor point: the ground is anchored to the bleed's foot and grows up to `#band-1`. An edge behind the anchor gives a height of 0.
