## In short

Three pages of a school atlas of an invented country. The maps are paintings with no lettering; every name on them is written in the text, so a translation changes the words and leaves the maps alone.

## What you'll build

Three plates from a school atlas of Varenia, a country invented for this recipe. Plate 1 places it on its continent. Plate 2 spreads the relief map across both pages, from the Lira Sea to the border with Brunavia, in height tints with three rivers and the line of a section. Plate 3 draws that section through the Albar Range. Each plate opens on a blue band and ends with a key or a glossary and a few activities for the class. The three maps are paintings made with an image model and carry no letter; borders, towns, the line of section, the scale and the north arrow are vector symbols over them. The 43 names, heights and scale figures are `::label` lines in the Markdown, set at anchors stored with each map, so the Spanish, English and Arabic editions share the same three paintings, and the Arabic one reads and binds from the right.

**This recipe answers:**

- How do I name the places on a map from the text, so each translation keeps the same drawing?
- How do I lay one map across a double page and keep its names readable in a right-to-left edition?

## The short answer

Label styles in the config, label fields on the anchors of a resource.

```js
// script.js, lines 43–68
// A label takes the style its anchor names: seas and rivers in italic blue, ranges in spaced
// brown capitals, towns on a white halo. Arabic is neither slanted nor letter-spaced, and
// Naskh and Kufi set small, so the Arabic edition gets the same styles upright, unspaced and
// 15 % larger.
const [SLANT, TRACK, SIZE] = AR ? ['normal', 0, 1.15] : ['italic', 1, 1];
const halo = { color: col('paper'), width: pt(1.4) };
const style = (id, size, color, more) => ({ id, fontFamily: LABEL, fontSize: pt(size * SIZE),
  fontWeight: AR ? 500 : 400, color: col(color), ...more });
const water = (id, size, spacing, more) => style(id, size, 'water', { fontStyle: SLANT,
  textTransform: spacing ? 'uppercase' : 'none', letterSpacing: spacing * TRACK, ...more });
const caps = (id, size, color, spacing, more) => style(id, size, color, {
  fontWeight: AR ? 700 : 600, textTransform: 'uppercase', letterSpacing: spacing * TRACK,
  ...more });
const labelStyles = [
  water('ocean', 9.5, 0.3), water('sea', 7.5, 0.16), water('river', 6.8, 0, { halo }),
  caps('range', 7, 'relief', 0.32, { halo }), caps('region', 6.5, 'muted', 0.24, { halo }),
  caps('country', 8.5, 'muted', 0.36, { halo }), caps('nation', 12, 'ink', 0.42, { halo }),
  style('capital', 7.6, 'ink', { fontWeight: 700, halo }), style('town', 7, 'ink', { halo }),
  style('peak', 6.5, 'ink', { fontWeight: AR ? 700 : 600, halo }),
  style('island', 6.5, 'ink', { halo }),
  style('point', 8.5, 'band', { fontWeight: 700, halo }), style('tick', 6, 'muted'),
];
// An anchor is a point of the picture in fractions of its width and height, with the side of
// the label that stands there, its turn and its style. km(win) reads a point in km off a map.
const km = (win) => (id, x, y, labelStyle, more) => ({ id, x: (x - win.x0) / (win.x1 - win.x0),
  y: (y - win.y0) / (win.y1 - win.y0), style: labelStyle, ...more });
```

## Ingredients

**Teaches**

- [Labels on a picture](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#figures-with-labels): :::figure{resource} with one ::label[TEXT]{at} line per name: each label stands at an anchor of the resource (a point with its side, turn, measure and style) or at x% y%, in a labelStyles style, and the drawing carries no letters.
- [Spread templates](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#spreads): A template with spread: true lays two facing pages as one sheet from a verso; a frame with crossGutter runs across the spine, and the others keep off the gutter band.
- [Composed pages](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#composed-pages): A page laid out from a template of named frames in the config, filled by a ::::page fence whose content names each frame by its slot.

## Method

### 1 · A place is a point of the drawing

```js
// script.js, lines 421–463
const above = { verticalAlign: 'bottom' }, below = { verticalAlign: 'top' };
const r = km(WIN.relief), l = km(WIN.locator);
const ANCHORS = {
  relief: [
    r('ocean', 172, 157, 'ocean'), r('lira', 20, 52, 'sea', { rotate: -84 }),
    ...TOWNS.map(([id, x, y]) => (id === 'calvera' ? r(id, x, y + 2.6, 'town', below)
      : r(id, x, y - 2.6, id === 'almaren' ? 'capital' : 'town', above))),
    l('ocean', -180, -40, 'ocean', { width: 0.2 }), l('almaren', 259, 127 + 22, 'capital', below),
  ],
  // The section: fractions of the drawing, whose plot starts 14 mm in and runs 3 to 51 mm down.
  section: (() => {
    const [w, h] = MAP.section, x = (u) => (14 + u * (w - 14)) / w;
    const y = (m) => (h - 7 - m * (h - 10) / PROFILE_TOP) / h;
    return [
      { id: 'a', x: x(0), y: (h - 5.5) / h, style: 'point', ...below },
      { id: 'b', x: x(0.98), y: (h - 5.5) / h, style: 'point', ...below },
      ...[500, 1000, 1500, 2000].map((m) => ({ id: `m${m}`, x: 7 / w, y: y(m), style: 'tick' })),
      { id: 'sela', x: x(0.3), y: y(380), style: 'region' },
      { id: 'crest', x: x(0.47), y: y(2260), style: 'range', ...above },
      { id: 'plain', x: x(0.82), y: y(430), style: 'region' },
    ];
  })(),
};
```

An anchor is a point in fractions of the picture's width and height, so it holds at any size the frame sets the map, and when the reflow ladder sets a map smaller its names go with it. `km()` turns the kilometres read off a grid laid over the painting into those fractions: a town's dot and its name both come from `TOWNS` and cannot drift apart. The anchor holds what belongs to the place, not to the language: its style, the turn of a river's or a range's name along its course, and the side of the name that stands at the point. Town names stand centred above their dot, because `align: 'start'` would be the left of an English name and the right of an Arabic one.

The paintings were made in order. The relief plate came first, painted by an image model from a hill-shaded height map of the country; the locator map was painted from the relief plate and the section from the same heights, so coasts and heights agree on all three. A grid drawn over each picture gave the kilometres of every anchor, and the borders were cut where they reach the painted coast.

### 2 · Three Markdown files, one resource

```js
// script.js, lines 467–477
// A resource has no alt text, caption or note here: each edition's `:::figure` says its own.
const PAINTINGS = { // each plate's painting, a file in assets/, named by its width in pixels
  locator: asset('locator-1776.jpg'), relief: asset('relief-1984.jpg'),
  section: asset('section-1760.jpg') };
const drawings = { locator: locatorMap, relief: reliefMap, section: profile };
const resources = Object.entries(MAP).map(([id, [w, h]]) => ({ id, typeId: 'map', kind: 'svg',
  createdAt: 0, updatedAt: 0, svg: { fileId: `${id}.svg`, width: w * 10, height: h * 10 },
  anchors: ANCHORS[id] }));
for (const [id, draw] of Object.entries(drawings)) {
  await loadSvg(`${id}.svg`, draw(MAP[id], await dataUrl(PAINTINGS[id])));
}
```

The resource has one picture (an SVG that holds the painting and the vector symbols over it) and one list of anchors for every edition. Each edition writes one `::label[…]{at="…"}` line per anchor inside `:::figure{resource="relief" slot="map"}`, so `::label[Calvera Plain]{at="plain"}` and `::label[Llanura de Calvera]{at="plain"}` stand on the same spot, broken into two lines by the anchor's `width` when they need it. The alternative text changes with the edition too: each `:::figure` carries its own in a `::alt[…]` line, and a caption or a note would go the same way with `::caption[…]` and `::note[…]`. An anchor with a style that an edition leaves without a label is reported as `anchorUnlabelled`, and a label whose `at` names no anchor is not drawn and is reported as `labelAnchorUnknown`.

### 3 · A sheet and a double sheet

```js
// script.js, lines 72–105
const at = (to, edge, x = 0, y = 0) => ({ anchor: { to, edge }, offset: { x: mm(x), y: mm(y) } });
const kicker = { kind: 'text', id: 'unit', content: '{attr.unit}', fontFamily: LABEL,
  fontSize: pt(AR ? 10 : 8.5), fontWeight: AR ? 500 : 600, letterSpacing: pt(1.3 * TRACK),
  textTransform: 'uppercase', color: col('sky'), align: AR ? 'right' : 'left',
  // Decoration stands on the sheet: the kicker goes to the side the page starts reading from.
  placement: at('container', AR ? 'top-right' : 'top-left', 0, -11) };
const band = { kind: 'box', id: 'band', style: { backgroundColor: col('band') },
  placement: { ...at('bleed', 'top-left'), size: { width: 'fill', height: mm(BAND + 3) } } };
const sheet = {
  id: 'sheet', header: false, decoration: { elements: [band, kicker] },
  frames: [
    { name: 'title', takes: 'h1', placement: at('container', 'top-left', 0, -3) },
    { name: 'text', flow: true, columns: 2, columnGap: mm(7),
      placement: at('container', 'top-left', 0, BAND - PAGE.top + 7) },
    { name: 'map' },
    { name: 'key', style: 'key', width: mm(66) },
    { name: 'tasks', style: 'tasks', placement: at('#key', 'right-of', 6) },
  ],
  // A longer text pushes the map and the key down; the map is set smaller before the text is.
  groups: [{ name: 'column', kind: 'stack', frames: ['text', 'map', 'key'], gap: mm(6) }],
};
// The double sheet: one band and one map across both pages, the boxes under the map.
const spread = {
  id: 'spread', spread: true, header: false, decoration: { elements: [band, kicker] },
  frames: [
    { name: 'title', takes: 'h1', width: mm(177), placement: at('container', 'top-left', 0, -3) },
    { name: 'map', crossGutter: true, // the one frame that runs across the spine
      placement: at('container', 'top-left', 0, BAND - PAGE.top + 5) },
    { name: 'text', flow: true, columns: 2, columnGap: mm(7), width: mm(177) },
    { name: 'key', style: 'key', width: mm(72), placement: at('#map', 'below', 213, 6) },
    { name: 'tasks', style: 'tasks', placement: at('#key', 'right-of', 6) },
  ],
  groups: [{ name: 'column', kind: 'stack', frames: ['map', 'text'], gap: mm(6) }],
};
```

Both templates have the same five frames, so a plate's Markdown has the same shape on one page or on two: the title, the text that names no slot, the map, the key and the activities. On the double sheet `spread: true` lays both pages as one sheet 390 mm wide, and only the map frame sets `crossGutter`, so it runs over the spine while the text and the boxes keep to their own pages. The text, the map and the key form a `stack` group: in the bench's stress test, with every text 30 % longer, the Arabic edition sets the locator map at 87.5 % and the boxes under it move up, with no warning.

### 4 · One palette for the page, the tints and the key

```js
// script.js, lines 19–33
const palette = {
  ink: '#1f2a2e', paper: '#ffffff', muted: '#55646a',
  band: '#1d5f73', // the accent: the head of each sheet, box stripes, list numbers
  sky: '#d4e9f2', // the kicker on the band
  tint: '#eef2ef', // the key's box
  water: '#0b2a47', sea: '#8ec5e9', // the names of water, and the sea of the key
  // The key's tints are the median colours of the painted relief at each height band.
  low: '#aec67f', hill: '#ced285', upland: '#efce80', mount: '#d79c61', peak: '#b5734b',
  relief: '#5a3519', // the names of ranges
  land: '#e1dfbe', country: '#ebcb73', border: '#8a3b52', // the locator map's washes and border
};
// col(id) links a colour to its palette entry; the vector symbols read the same hex from `palette`.
const col = (id) => ({ hex: palette[id], model: 'hex', paletteId: id });
const colorPalette = Object.entries({ ...palette, 'main-color': palette.band }) // the defaults' id
  .map(([id, hex]) => ({ id, name: id, value: { hex, model: 'hex' } }));
```

The five height tints are palette entries (`palette.low` to `palette.peak`), set to the median colour of the painted relief in each height band, and the key of plate 2 writes `:swatch{color="low"}` with the same ids. The painting does not read the palette: a new hex changes the key and the vector symbols and leaves the picture as it is, so to change the map's colours you paint it again. Water names in `water` have a contrast of at least 6:1 on the painted sea, and the white title has 7.2:1 on `band`.

### 5 · The Arabic edition

The code is [the short answer](https://postext.dev/en/cookbook/school-atlas-labelled-maps.md#the-short-answer) above. `locale: 'ar'` sets the text right to left and binds the book on the right, so the spread opens on the right-hand page and the frames follow the mirrored content area: the title and the text stand on the right, the key to the right of the activities. The maps are not mirrored, and each Arabic name stands where its place is drawn. The label styles lose their italics and letter-spacing in Arabic and grow by 15 %, since Kufi sets small. The decoration and the folios stay on the sheet, so the kicker moves to the top right and the folios swap sides.

## The whole recipe

One file, composed from the recipe's folder with the sample text and the Cookbook's shared kit inlined; it builds its own page. To run it, put it in a `<script type="module">` on an empty page, or paste it into the JS panel of a new CodePen (as a module). It imports postext from esm.sh, so there is nothing to install or build.

# Varenia on the map

Varenia is a country in the south of the continent, with Ostelia to the north and Brunavia to the east. The Lira Sea washes its west coast and the Misty Ocean its south coast, which the Gulf of Sora cuts into. It covers about 40,000 km² and has nearly four million people.

The capital, Almaren, stands on the River Merel a few kilometres from Lake Ormo. Almost half the people live on the coast, in port towns such as Calvera, Tessa and Port Sora. This map shows where Varenia is; the next two pages show its relief and its rivers.

# The relief and rivers of Varenia

The Albar Range crosses the west of the country from south-west to north-east. It is the highest range in Varenia: Albar Peak reaches 2,565 m. In the east rise the Grey Hills, lower and more rounded. Between the two lies the Ormo Plateau, about 600 m above the sea.

The rivers rise in the mountains and run down to the sea. The Sela flows west and reaches the sea at Calvera. The Duna, short and fast, runs south. The Merel, the longest, passes through Lake Ormo and flows into the Gulf of Sora. The line A–B marks the section on Plate 3.

# A section through the Albar Range

A section shows the shape of the land as if it were cut along a line. This one follows the line A–B on the relief map: it starts in the hills of the north, drops into the Sela valley, climbs the Albar Range to more than 2,100 m and ends on the plain of the south coast.

The line A–B is 126 km long. To make the mountains easy to see, the vertical scale is stretched about fourteen times, so the slopes in the drawing look much steeper than they are.

Varenia was invented for this atlas. Text and maps: CC BY 4.0. The maps are paintings generated with diffusion models; borders, symbols and names are set by Postext. Set in Source Sans 3 and Source Serif 4 (SIL OFL).

**Range:** a line of mountains whose peaks stand in a row.

**Plateau:** a high, flat stretch of land, more than 400 m above the sea.

**Valley:** low land between hills or mountains, often with a river along it.

**Plain:** low, nearly flat land, like the land along the south coast.

## Variations

### Name a place the map has no anchor for

A label can stand at a point given in percentages of the picture, with a style of its own.

```diff
 :::figure{resource="relief" slot="map"}
+::label[Nema Light]{at="7% 68%" style="town"}
 ::label[Misty Ocean]{at="ocean"}
```

### Number the maps and caption them

Give the map type a counter and a prefix, and each resource a caption: see [the atlas sheet with numbered maps](https://postext.dev/en/cookbook/atlas-map-sheet.md), which captions its maps on a blue bar.

## Pitfalls

- **Layout warning: Label at an unknown anchor** (`labelAnchorUnknown`). A ::label of a :::figure names, with at=, an anchor that the figure's resource does not have. The label is not drawn on the picture; the reflowable EPUB still lists it and the picture's alternative text names it. Fix: Correct the anchor id in at= (the warning lists the resource's anchors), add the anchor to the resource, or place the label with at="x% y%". ([Documentation](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#labelanchorunknown))
- **Layout warning: Anchor without a label** (`anchorUnlabelled`). An anchor of a figure's resource names a label style, and no ::label of the figure stands at it in this language: the word the map has room for is missing from this edition. A note, not an error: anchors without a style (a comic speaker's) are not reported. Fix: Write the label in this language's Markdown (::label[…]{at="anchor"}), or take the style off the anchor if this edition leaves the word out. ([Documentation](https://postext.dev/en/docs/composed-pages.md#anchorunlabelled))

- The alternative text of each map lives in the Markdown, as a `::alt[…]` line inside its `:::figure`, one per edition. A figure that gives none keeps the resource's own `altText`; `script.js` holds no word of the page.
- The anchors and the vector symbols (borders, towns, peaks, the line of section) stand at kilometres read off the painting. Paint a map again and its coasts, rivers and ridges move: lay the grid over the new picture and read them again, or a name will land in the sea.
- On a right-to-left page the frames are mirrored with the content area, but the template's decoration is not: place a kicker by edition, as `kicker` does.
- A frame in two columns may cut a paragraph one line before its end and leave that line at the head of the second column. Read the columns of each edition and move a sentence from one paragraph to the next when that happens.
