## Preparo

### 1 · Escrever a tira onde o jornal a quer

O código é [a resposta curta](https://postext.dev/pt/cookbook/newspaper-daily-strip.md#a-resposta-curta) acima. Um `:::strip` tem o corpo de uma página de quadrinhos (o seu `split`, as suas linhas `::panel` e o roteiro delas), mas é um bloco do texto ([tiras](https://postext.dev/pt/docs/comics.md#tiras)). Na capa, de uma coluna, a tira de domingo é composta onde está escrita, com 210 mm de altura, e o sumário vem depois dela. A divisão dela, `55 / * [40 | *]`, dá à cena larga da pescaria uma fileira própria e às duas piadas uma fileira embaixo. Uma tira nunca se divide: se não cabe, passa inteira para a página seguinte.

### 2 · Fazer a tira diária flutuar sobre as colunas

A página de dentro abre com um H1 cujo estilo de título passa a seção para quatro colunas. A tira diária vem logo depois dele, com `span=page placement=bottom`: flutua até o pé da página na largura das quatro colunas, e as colunas da matéria terminam niveladas acima dela. Sem `height` nem `aspect`, uma tira assume a forma que deixa os quadros quadrados, aqui de quatro para um. Escrita com `placement=top`, ela abriria a página seguinte, porque um flutuante nunca sobe acima do ponto em que foi escrito.

As imagens foram desenhadas quadradas ou largas, e as células da divisão de domingo não são: a piada da bota cai numa célula de 112 × 88 mm. Cada área segura é cortada no que a piada precisa, Pip, Otto e a bota, para que o recorte nunca deixe faixas vazias em volta da imagem ([quadros e arte](https://postext.dev/pt/docs/comics.md#quadros-e-arte)).

Cada edição compõe o jornal em fontes para a sua escrita e letreira as tiras com as suas próprias fontes de quadrinhos. Os balões japoneses correm na vertical. As edições japonesa e árabe leem as tiras da direita para a esquerda, e os quadros de cada fileira trocam de lugar; a árabe, composta da direita para a esquerda, espelha também as colunas da página. As imagens e a divisão continuam as mesmas; só muda `content.<lang>.md` ([sentido de leitura](https://postext.dev/pt/docs/comics.md#sentido-de-leitura)).

Ines Barlow desenha um pinguim e uma morsa toda manhã de segunda a sexta, na mesa da cozinha de sua casa em Saltmarsh Lane, e faz isso há dez anos. *Pip e Otto* saiu pela primeira vez na Gazeta em 17 de outubro de 2016, espremida embaixo das palavras cruzadas. Hoje é publicada em onze jornais e em seis línguas, e continua cabendo em quatro quadros quadrados.

“A regra é que a piada tem que cair no quarto quadro, nem um antes”, diz Barlow. “Se o Otto for engraçado no segundo, desperdicei a tirinha.” Pip é pequeno, educado e vive com fome. Otto toca uma padaria num bloco de gelo, vai trabalhar de gravata-borboleta e nunca deu uma resposta direta. Os leitores escrevem para os dois, mas a maioria das cartas vai para o Otto.

Barlow cresceu em cima da padaria dos pais, na Harrow Road, e é daí que vêm os croissants. O pinguim veio depois, de um cartão-postal que a avó mandou da Cidade do Cabo. “Desenhei o Pip no verso de um bloco de pedidos quando tinha nove anos. Ele já usava o cachecol. O Otto me custou mais vinte anos.”

Ela mandou as seis primeiras tirinhas para a Gazeta no verão de 2016, com uma carta de apresentação de uma linha só. O editor de quadrinhos da época, Martin Fry, publicou as tiras em caráter de teste por um mês. O teste nunca terminou. Fry, hoje aposentado, ainda recebe a tirinha pelo correio um dia antes. “Ele me avisa quando a piada está fraca”, diz Barlow. “Quase sempre tem razão.”

O trabalho começa na segunda, com cinco rascunhos a lápis em folhas A4, quatro quadros por folha. Na quarta, já estão arte-finalizados e coloridos. Os desenhos chegam ao jornal sem nenhuma palavra; o texto vai à parte, num roteiro curto: quem fala, em que quadro e o quê. Cada onomatopeia ganha uma linha própria.

O hábito começou com a edição francesa, em 2019. “Letrear uma tira duas vezes à mão era uma semana de trabalho”, conta. “Agora cada jornal compõe o texto na sua língua, e os balões são desenhados em volta.” Os jornais brasileiros recebem *Acabou de sair do forno!*; a edição japonesa compõe os balões em colunas verticais e, como a árabe, lê os quadros da direita para a esquerda. Os desenhos nunca mudam.

A tira dominical é a exceção à regra dos quatro quadros. Ocupa meia página, em cores, e Barlow a trata como um conto curto: três quadros, uma piada mais lenta e quase sempre um peixe. A desta semana está na capa.

E o que vem agora para a dupla? “O Otto vai aprender a patinar”, diz Barlow. “Ele não vai gostar.”

## Erros comuns

- **Qualquer objeto headings desativa a quebra de página do H1.** Por padrão, um H1 salta para uma página ímpar (always-odd), mas passar qualquer objeto headings redefine esse padrão, então os capítulos ficam emendados e span: 'page' não faz nada. Declare de novo headings.levels[0].breakBefore: { enabled: true, parity } em toda configuração.
- **Carregue todas as fontes antes do layout.** O motor de layout mede o texto com as fontes que o navegador carregou e guarda as larguras em cache, então uma fonte que chega depois da primeira composição deixa quebras de linha erradas e um PDF que não corresponde mais à tela. Carregue antes todos os pesos e estilos e chame clearMeasurementCache() antes de recompor quando alguma chegar atrasada.
- **Um flutuante 'top' nunca cai na página que o cita.** Um flutuante nunca fica acima da própria referência, então um flutuante 'top' na largura da página citado na página N abre a página N+1. Cite-o antes, ou use a posição 'auto' ou 'bottom', que podem ocupar o pé da página que o cita.

- O cabeçalho da seção é desenhado pelo cabeçalho da página, não por uma abertura de H1, então nada além da linha do fólio fica acima da tira da capa.
- Uma área segura mais larga que o formato da sua célula deixa a imagem com faixas do fundo do quadro em volta, e a montagem avisa `comicPanelLetterbox`.
