In short

Two pages of a Japanese comic. The Japanese pages are lettered top to bottom in narrow columns; the other editions keep the Japanese order of the panels, starting at the top right.

What you'll build

The two opening pages of a kendo manga, 前の晩 (The Night Before), written for the recipe and drawn in black and white: Hana practises alone the evening before the prefectural tournament, Sora brings her a shrine charm, their coach sends them home. The Japanese original comes first, lettered the way a weekly magazine letters it: antique type (kana in a Mincho cut, kanji in a Gothic one), balloons tall rather than wide, no full stop at the end of a balloon. Facing it, the same two pages in this page's language (English on the Japanese page), still read from the top right panel, as licensed manga have been since the early 2000s. The trim is B6, 128 × 182 mm, the tankōbon size.

This recipe answers

  • How do I lay out manga to read right to left?
  • How do I letter Japanese vertically inside balloons?

The short answer

script.js · lines 44–60in full code
const comics = (lang) => ({
  // The pages were drawn for right-to-left reading: panel 1 sits top right. The
  // reading direction stays 'auto', which follows the art in a left-to-right
  // language too: the English page keeps the Japanese panel order.
  artDirection: 'rtl',
  mirrorArt: false, // never flop the art: Hana's grip on the sword, the kimono's fold
  gutter: { horizontal: mm(4.5), vertical: mm(2) }, // a tier gap twice the panel gap
  panel: { borderWidth: pt(0.9), borderColor: col('ink'), background: col('paper') },
  lettering: {
    fontFamily: EDITIONS[lang].faces[0], color: col('ink'),
    fontSize: pt(['ja', 'zh'].includes(lang) ? 8.5 : 7.5), // one size per edition
    // 'auto' sets Japanese in columns of 8 characters at most and drops the final 。.
    // Chinese goes in columns too: a book bound on the right never mixes the two.
    writingMode: lang === 'zh' ? 'vertical' : 'auto',
  },
  balloonStyles: balloons(),
});

The art reads right to left, so every edition does

Method

#1 · Read in the direction the art was drawn

The code is the short answer above. A manga artist composes every page from the top right: the first panel, the first speaker and the eye's path across a tier all start there. artDirection: 'rtl' tells the engine so, and with the reading direction left to 'auto' every edition follows the art; an Arabic edition would read right to left anyway. The art is never mirrored. Western publishers flipped manga until about 2002, and readers saw every swordsman turn left-handed and every kimono fold the wrong way; leaving the pages as drawn costs the reader one habit, while flipping them costs the drawing. Each :::page carries its split, 30 / 34 [46 | *] / * [44 | *], and the first cell of each tier is laid out on the right (reading direction).

#2 · Mark each speaker once, on the picture

The words change with the language; the drawing does not. Each panel picture carries a safe area that every crop keeps, and for each character a mouth (where a speech tail points), a head (for thought bubbles) and a face no balloon may cover, all in fractions of the picture. A script line names its speaker, sora: …, and the engine places the balloon near that character in any language. A speaker who is not in the picture, like Sora when the coach appears in the doorway, gets a tail to the edge of the panel: sora{tail=bottom}.

#3 · Give each language its balloons

script.js · lines 64–71in full code
const balloons = () => [
  { id: 'speech', fill: col('paper'), stroke: col('ink'), strokeWidth: pt(0.6), roundness: 2 },
  { id: 'whisper', fill: col('paper'), stroke: col('ink'), roundness: 2 },
  { id: 'thought', fill: col('paper'), stroke: col('ink') },
  { id: 'inner', fill: col('tone'), stroke: col('tone'), strokeWidth: pt(0), italic: false },
  { id: 'caption', fill: col('paper'), stroke: col('ink'), strokeWidth: pt(0.5) },
  { id: 'sfx', color: col('ink'), haloColor: col('paper') },
];

The styles say what kind of voice a balloon carries: plain oval speech, a dashed whisper, a cloud for a thought, a grey box for Hana's inner voice. How the words sit inside is the edition's business. In Japanese the engine sets columns of at most eight characters, drops the 。 that ends a balloon and keeps the 、, turns the two digits of 第42回 upright in one em (:tcy[42]), and sets !? side by side in a single cell. The script gives each name its reading where it first appears, {一ノ瀬|いちのせ}, as manga print furigana over names. In English the same balloons become ovals around horizontal lines, and their order still runs from the right.

#4 · Load each edition's faces with its words

script.js · lines 359–371in full code
const SFX = /^sfx[^::\n]*[::](.*)$/gm; // sound-effect lines: the second face sets them
async function loadEdition(lang) {
  const text = TEXT[lang];
  const [face, sfx] = EDITIONS[lang].faces;
  const faces = { [face]: FONTS[face], [sfx]: FONTS[sfx] };
  if (['ja', 'zh'].includes(lang)) { // CJK: only the files that hold these characters
    const effects = [...text.matchAll(SFX)].map((m) => m[1]).join('');
    await loadCjkFonts({ [face]: FONTS[face] }, text.replace(SFX, ''), { vertical: true });
    await loadCjkFonts({ [sfx]: FONTS[sfx] }, effects, { vertical: true });
  }
  if (lang === 'ar') await loadArabicFonts(faces, text);
  await loadComicFonts(faces, text); // the bold and italic the faces do not ship
}

Zen Antique and Dela Gothic One ship as about a hundred files each, one per range of characters: each face is loaded with the words it sets, the balloons for one and the sound effects for the other, so the page fetches only the files it needs. loadComicFonts declares the bold of a shout and the italic of an inner voice from the files these faces do ship, so the screen and the PDF draw the same letters.

#5 · Set the original beside each edition

script.js · lines 376–385in full code
const FACING = LANG === 'ja' ? 'en' : LANG; // Japanese readers see the English edition
const TEXT = { ja: original, [FACING]: LANG === 'ja' ? english : markdown };
await loadFonts(FONTS, Object.values(TEXT).join('\n'));
const resources = await panels();
const build = async (lang) => { // the same pictures and page; this language's lettering
  await loadEdition(lang);
  return buildWithFonts(() => buildDocument({ markdown: TEXT[lang], resources,
    continuation: { pageIndexOffset: 1 } }, edition(lang)), TEXT[lang]);
};
const docs = [await build('ja'), await build(FACING)];

Every language of this site has its own edition of the two pages, written in its own content.<lang>.md, and each edition faces the Japanese original: /* @content@ja */ inlines content.ja.md in every edition, and the Japanese page pairs the original with the English lettering. The Chinese edition is set in columns too, because a book that opens from the right does not mix vertical and horizontal balloons; the Arabic one reads right to left by its own direction.

Pitfalls

Pitfall

Tag a Japanese text 'ja', never zh-Hans or LANG

A recipe's editions are en and es, but a Japanese sample is Japanese in both: `locale: LANG` would tag it English or Spanish, and a Chinese tag would set it by the Chinese rules (Kaiming punctuation, small kana free to start a line, 图 for 図, Chinese glyph forms in the PDF). Write 'ja': it picks the Japan region (JLReq line breaking and punctuation, sesame emphasis marks, furigana spacing, 図 and 表 labels) and turns hyphenation off. The lint fails a text with kana under a zh or ko tag. Japanese line breaking (kinsoku) →

Pitfall

Chinese faces load by slices, through the cjk block

Fontsource serves a Chinese, Japanese or Korean family as about a hundred files per weight, each covering a range of characters. loadFonts fetches only the latin file, so on screen the Han characters come from a system face and measure wrong, and fontsourceProvider hands the PDF that latin file, which prints them as empty boxes. List the cjk kit block, call loadCjkFonts(FONTS, markdown) after loadFonts (once per voice, with the text it sets, when the book uses several CJK faces) and give renderToPdf fontProvider: cjkPdfProvider: both take the files that hold the text's characters. Chinese, Japanese and Korean fonts →

Pitfall

A config is cached by identity: build a fresh object

The engine caches resolved configs by object identity, so changing a config in place and building again reuses the old result. Build a fresh object for every build, which is why a recipe's config is a factory: config(). Pages on a canvas →

Pitfall

Load every face before layout

Layout measures text with the faces the browser has loaded and caches the widths, so a face that arrives after the first build leaves wrong line breaks and a PDF that no longer matches the screen. Load every weight and style first, and call clearMeasurementCache() before rebuilding when one arrives late. Fonts before layout →

  • Put the first speaker of a panel on the right. Balloons follow the reading order, so in the panel where Sora hands over the charm the script gives the first line to Hana, who stands on the right. With Sora first, his balloons keep to his side of the panel, but the Japanese columns leave no room below them for Hana's reply: it stands beside them on the right and is read first.
  • A balloon that finds no room in its panel may cross the border, and the engine reports it (comicBalloonOverflow). Give a crowded panel a larger cell in the split before you shorten the dialogue.
